AGM/Cybersecurity: Where Do We Go From Here?

Gary Perkins, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for the Province of BC

Recent cyber-attacks on retail, IT, healthcare, financial institutions, and government remind us that no-one is immune. Today’s assaults are more sophisticated, targeted, and persistent, contributing to a threat landscape that is more complex than ever. With finite resources, organizations must be thoughtful in mitigating harmful effects that include reputational damage, business disruption, and/or financial loss.

Despite growing awareness of the problem many organizations that have failed to keep pace are left behind and struggle to identify what to do, how to do it, where to start, and who to trust. Security professionals are faced with the impossible task of keeping current to mitigate the latest threats while simultaneously mitigating risks to legacy infrastructure.

More than ever, it is imperative that cybersecurity professionals collaborate against common adversaries. They need to invest not only in themselves, but each other, and build the next generation of cybersecurity talent. According to a recent study by ISACA, there will be a global shortage of 2 million security professionals by 2019.  In Canada, the deficit is projected to be over 60,000. The only way we’ll be successful is through working together.

Gary Perkins is the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for the Government of British Columbia.  As the Executive Director of the Information Security Branch, he is responsible for providing cybersecurity services in support of the province.  He has over 19 years’ experience in information technology, risk management, and cybersecurity.  Prior to joining the BC Government, he worked in the private sector as chief of staff for security at  TELUS and, earlier in his career, led teams responsible for incident response, operations, delivery, and architecture for both corporate and managed security services customers.  A certified information systems security professional (CISSP) since 2004, Perkins also holds an MBA from Simon Fraser University’s Management of Technology program.
