GDPR: A Practical Guide from the Front Lines

Nicholas Van Exan (Product & Privacy Counsel, Hootsuite Inc.)

By now there are very few people in the world who have not heard about the EU’s forthcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and in particular its headline-grabbing maximum fines. Beyond the hyperbole, however, there are a number of important issues that companies all over the world need to consider when grappling with the GDPR and in particular its security requirements. The law is principles-based, not prescriptive. And as such it is a cause for concern for many. In this talk, Nick will provide an overview of the GDPR and share some of the practical insights he has learned in his GDPR journey at Hootsuite to date. You should walk away with a good sense of what the GDPR is, how it impacts Canadian businesses specifically, how to think about the security provisions of the GDPR, and practical efforts you can make to bolster your data protection programme in a short amount of time.

Nick is a lawyer and Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/C) working at Hootsuite. Prior to joining Hootsuite’s in-house legal team, Nick worked as a litigator at a large national firm on matters related to technology law and freedom of expression. Nick is also a software developer and has consulted on the design and development of a number of products, including legal compliance software for Finastra, a leading international fintech company.
